Runway to Everyday: Faux Fur

It’s one cold-weather winter trend that is hot, hot, hot! But can the real life woman pull off faux fur?

Fashion Blogger Jessica Christensen from “The Salt Blog” shows how to take this look from runway to everyday.

THE PIECE OF THE SEASON

If you buy one piece this season, let it be a fur vest. It’s a versatile piece you can dress up or down, and a stylish layering piece. To avoid bulk, look for one that cinches at the waist. You need some sort of belt with this silhouette! Pair it with a simple t-shirt, keeping the accessories minimal. I recommend wearing pumps or heeled boots with this style to create a slimming balance. Creativity is key when trying out a new look. Find out what works for your personality!

GO BOLD

Fur is a bold look. Period. You are making a statement when you wear it. Go for it! Since the fur is already making a bold statement, don’t be afraid to carry that bold theme throughout your entire outfit. You CAN pair fur with pattern. That is OK to do! If you buy something trendier and bolder, don’t spend a lot of money. Know you will probably only get one season out of it. For the bold fashionista, we like this fur top from ASOS. At only $27 you won’t feel bad if you only wear it this season.

BALANCE THE FEMININE

There is no texture more feminine than fur. That’s why we like it. But to avoid looking like you are in for a night at the opera, texture BALANCE is key. Bring in a little leather to soften and balance the femininity of the fur – it tones it down just a bit. Try pairing it with a dress, tights and a cute pair off booties, or dress it down with skinny jeans and flats. We like this leather and fur coat from ZARA because the statement of the fur is definitely there, while the leather give it that sleek, fashion forward feel. It’s an investment piece, so consider the fit to make sure you’ll love it for years.

STYLE IN SMALL DOSES

Perhaps the best and more practical way to wear fur is in small doses. You can look for fur trimmings on items like coats, boots and sweaters, or create your own with a fur collar. Jewel toned fur collars are trendy and look great paired with neutral colors. We don’t recommend investing a ton on this piece because the color will date it. We love this long, fur collar from Emerson Fry. It’s a classic piece that you’ll wear for years. Fur accessories are another way to pull it off – hats, socks and bags are all a way to incorporate this trend without taking it over the top. One of our favorite fur accessories is an infinity scarf. We like this one from Nordstrom because it adds texture to the fur and you can throw it on over a tee for effortless style.
