Sanity Systems for the Paper Pain

If you want to get organized, one of the biggest places to start is with all those piles of paper around your home. You have to tackle them as they come in.

Marla Dee is a professional organizer with Clear and Simple and will be helping people get organized at the Salt Lake Home Show.

Every home needs a simple system to manage the piles of bills, documents, and mail that can accumulate over time. Don’t let the paper pile up on your kitchen counter or cover your dining room table. If important papers are repeatedly getting lost with the junk mail, it’s probably the right time to get organized. Clear & SIMPLE has created systems to help you restore sanity in your life.

Systems of Sanity

The incoming and action systems of paper organization
These systems allow you to separate paper into useful categories by incorporating containers into the organization process. Keep in mind the size, location, and design of the containers you choose. Try to pick containers that match or blend in to their location. The location of these containers is also critical. Place them in spots that aren’t in the way but easily accessible.

– Incoming: In the same way that incoming e-mails land in a specific folder, create a similar container and spot for mail, thoughts, and information from other people. It’s important to process these items weekly into separate sections within this container. A few example sections could include:

o READ
o ACT
o FILE
o TOSS

– Action: This container is designated to all communications that require decisions or action before they are tossed or filed. Create separate sections within this container for general categories, such as:

o BILLS TO PAY
o CALENDAR EVENTS
o PROJECTS
o ITEMS TO FILE
