Try layering art in the living room!
You can add dimension, texture, and some really beautiful interest to your home this autumn with some unexpected layers. From your window treatments to your art, learn how to bring a cozy feel into any space with just a few special stacking techniques.
Designer Lauren Oviatt shared this home decorating secret.
The Power of Layering
Lauren emphasized the impact of layering in home decor. She explained, “Layers are just tools that we use in order to complete a room.” Layers can transform a space to make it feel more complete and inviting. Whether it’s adding, or even removing layers, the goal is to achieve a balanced and cohesive look.
Impactful Bedding
One of the easiest places to start layering is with your bedding. Lauren suggested, “It can be everything from extra pillows, like, pieces on the bed. It can also be the texture of what you’re bringing into the bedroom.” Incorporate different textures such as knits, chunky cottons, linens, and silks. Additionally, layering pillows and using a coverlet with a folded duvet at the bottom of the bed adds depth.
Wallpaper and Murals
Wallpaper and murals are often overlooked as layers, but they can significantly boost a room’s aesthetic. “When you think about completion of a space, if something’s still missing, it could be wallpaper,” Lauren said. From high-end hand-painted silk wallpaper to peel-and-stick options, there are a lot of ways to add texture and pattern to your walls.
Lauren noted, “Murals are having a huge moment in decor right now.” Starting with smaller spaces like powder rooms or mudrooms can be a fun and manageable way to experiment with this trend.
Layering Artwork
Layering artwork can add a unique and personal touch to your home. Instead of a single portrait over your sofa, consider laying out a gallery wall. Lauren suggested this grouping: “A portrait, next to a landscape, next to a plate that you found when you were vintage shopping.” Mix different types of art to create a visually interesting display.
Greenery
Greenery is another surprising element that can be layered. Lauren explained, “When you think about layering with greenery, it’s everything from a vase full of branches that sits on your console table to a really low, full arrangement on your coffee table.”
By incorporating greenery at different heights and in various arrangements, you add a natural touch to your space. “It’s just such a natural, non-forced way to bring decor into your house,” Lauren emphasized. “Greenery does something that nothing else can do.”
Layering Rugs
Layering rugs is a trend that adds both texture and functionality. Lauren advised, “Start with a solid or a jute rug down low, then put your oriental or your bordered or your patterned rug on top.” This technique can be used in all different rooms in the house, from entryways to family rooms.
Window Treatments and Wood Tones
Window treatments and wood tones can also act as visual layers. Lauren explained, “Wood tones are one of those things where you’re like, ‘I don’t need another thing because I’m full, but what can I add that’s just visual.’” Different wood grains and tones add warmth and depth to a room.
