SelectHealth Awards Nonprofits with the Select 25 Award

Utah is about to get a bit healthier. As part of its Select 25 award, Salt Lake-
based insurance carrier SelectHealth will award $2,500 to 25 Utah
organizations that improve health and wellness in the community or serve
populations with special needs.

This year’s winners were selected from all areas of Utah and represented a
wide range of services, including after-school exercise activities for kids,
housing for low-income families, and educational resources for those with
disabilities.

“When we evaluate applications, we focus on those that we can help the
most,” said Greg Reid, director of community outreach at SelectHealth. “The
cash grant will go a long way in helping each of the winners further their
cause.”

The Inspire Dance Studio in Clearfield will use its grant money for its Elevate
Academy, a dance class tailored to students with special needs. Each child in
the class is evaluated by a physical therapist and then given specific
instruction to improve movement. The dance group then has the opportunity
to perform at a wide range of community events.

“Children that have been told they can’t go to a ‘regular’ dance class can have
difficulty with self-esteem and healthy body image,” said dance instructor
and physical therapist Julie Bouck. “Elevate Academy encourages children and
young adults with differing abilities to participate in dance classes. No child
is turned away because they are in a wheelchair, walker, or have cognitive
deficits.”

The dance studio is one of several Select 25 award winners helping kids to
stay healthy. Other winning programs focus on the needs of adults.
Comunidades Unidas will use the funds to provide 1,000 breast cancer
screenings to refugee and immigrant women in Salt Lake City. The Wayne
County Community Center will use $2,500 for a new transmission for its own
meals-on-wheels vehicle.

“Though the causes are varied,” Reid said, “They all share a common goal of
helping those around them.”

The Select 25 award was originally created in 2008 to commemorate the 25th
anniversary of SelectHealth. To learn more about all of this year’s winners,
