Set up an inviting holiday living room! Simple seating formulas for large and small spaces

Your living room is about to work overtime!

During November and December, our living rooms really do become the heart of our home. From family gatherings to quality time with your little crew, you want a warm and welcoming space.

Brittany Allen, with Nest Style and Design, shared easy formulas to create living room seating that not only looks just right, but feels inviting too.

Rugs

When designing a room, start with the rug. It’s the grounding piece, and gives you a foundation to pull style and colors from. Rugs should be generous enough to get all the front legs of the seating options at least 6″ resting on the rug. This helps the room feel connected and not like pieces are floating on their own. Orient the rug with the room and try to have about 12″ of a perimeter from the walls.

Smaller spaces usually require an 8×10 or 9×12 rug. For large rooms, use 10×14 or bigger.

Sofa & Chairs

Your sofa is the powerhouse of your main living space and will get more used that any other piece in the room. Invest in a good one!

Each room is made up of some combination of sofa and chairs depending on what the space allows. Smaller rooms usually can only fit one main sofa. Then, room size permitting, mix in a combination of chairs.

The focal point of most living spaces is either the fireplace and/or TV. Orient the large sofa perpendicular to the TV or fireplace for optimal comfort. From the sofa, build out with a hard surface coffee table or upholstered ottoman.
