These summer activities will take you right back to 1990!
It’s the obsession of the summer. You’ve got articles, podcasts, and ironically, social media memes all romanticizing the 1990s. Women seem to be craving the idea of a slower, simpler, and memory-packed summer that sticks.
Lydia Senn posts ideas and ways to save time and money while still having a great time. She shared some fun ways that families can enjoy a ’90s summer.
Screen-Free Mornings
Lydia recommended starting with screen-free time. “We shoot for two to three analog mornings a week,” she shared.
These mornings are filled with nature walks, coloring, Legos, and Play-Doh—“just like the old school stuff that we had as kids,” she said. The hardest part, Lydia admitted, is simply turning off the screens. But once you do, “boredom begets creativity.”
Backyard Water Play
Nothing says summer like water fun. “Squirt guns, water balloons, slip and slide,” Lydia suggested. A simple sprinkler can provide hours of entertainment.
“Just have some fun in the backyard,” she encouraged. These low-cost activities bring back the carefree spirit of 1990s summers.
Creative Play Without the Price Tag
Skip the expensive art classes and embrace DIY creativity. “We like to do chalk drawings on the front porch or maybe go out to the park,” Lydia said.
She also recommended using water guns filled with watercolor for painting, or setting up a toy car wash. “Very simple on the prep,” she noted, “but then it’s the imagination or the experience that takes over.”
Movie Nights with Nostalgia
Lydia’s list of 1990s movie night favorites includes “Matilda,” “The Mighty Ducks,” and “The Goofy Movie.” She added, “Even my teenager is really into The Goofy Movie right now.”
Another must-watch? “Angels in the Outfield.” “There is not a better movie out there in terms of the writing and the comedic timing and the message,” Host Brooke Walker added.
Food That Feels Like Summer
Simple food can be just as nostalgic. “Walking tacos are fun,” Lydia said. Put all your taco ingredients into a chip bag and you have tacos on the go!
She also loves homemade Lunchables: “Get the little naan bread, add a little pizza sauce and some cheese and pepperoni… and say, go eat outside.”
