Slow the Flow: Conserving Water Tips

Conserving Water Tips

• One primary tip essential to saving water is to know when to use it on your lawns. Don’t water during the heat of the day, which means between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. If you have your sprinkler system running during that time, the majority of the water never makes it to the soil – it evaporates. Simply adjust the timer on your irrigation system to water during the early morning or late evening hours.

• We have all seen the sprinkler head that waters more of the sidewalk than the driveway. It is very simple to fix and can help your lawn stay greener, longer. Simply rotate the sprinkler head back into position. This also brings up another great tip – if you do have a dirty sidewalk or driveway, don’t hose it off. Pull out the broom and give it a good sweep. This simple act can save hundreds of gallons of water.

• Brown spots in a lawn can be very unappealing. However, the best way to take care of it is to bring out the hose and water the brown spot by hand. Turning on your entire sprinkler system to get that one spot is not a very good idea. In many cases it over-saturates the rest of your lawn, but never quite gets the brown spot. In addition to watering the brown spot by hand, it can save many gallons of water by simply placing a shut-off nozzle on the end of your hose. It only takes a few minutes to put on, but can prevent water from simply running all over the place.
