Stand-Out Spring Decor: Make a DIY Door Banner

A cute spring wreath is a standard decor piece. Add to that spring decor staple with a unique door banner.

Georgana Hall shares shares how to make this cheery wrap that will make you stand out from the neighbors.

Hello Spring!  Make a Door Banner Instead of a Spring Wreath

Instead of a hanging a cheery wreath.   What about a cheery wrap? We’re calling the door banner a new sign of spring. It’s a drape of fabric thrown over the door – with designs on front and back.

The how-to and FREE instructions from fabric designer Georgana Hall are found here.

Tips:

Start with a painters drop cloth canvas

This is a basic item found at the home improvement store for under $15. We bought the 4’ x 15’ size. Note: One painters drop cloth makes 2 door banners. Grab a girlfriend and split the purchase!

Cut canvas to length and finish edges

Drape the canvas over your door so it shows on back and front. For style points, cutting a triangle notch at either end. Secure the banner with long black elastic loops that go under the door. (See free downloadable instructions for suggested dimensions).

Stencil with simple sentiment

Decorate the lower part with a general sentiment or design. This should be applicable to any season. Try phrases like, “Home Sweet Home” or “Gather.” Use good stenciling technique, with minimal paint and a dabbing motion with your brush as you apply the paint.

Layer on a colorful cloth

Over your canvas, layer a length of patterned fabric that fits your occasion.

Accent the outside

Use a wreath hanger over all your fabric layers on the front or exterior of the door. Hang a wreath or other door decoration.

Embellish the inside

Use Adorn It iron-on applique patterns for a handcrafted design that shows on the inside of your door.
