With string and a jigsaw, you can cut a perfect arch! Here’s the beginner tutorial…

We promise, a perfect arch is not hard to make!

A perfect arch is a shape all DIY-ers dream of, and this technique promises the perfect line every time! From headboards to rock climbing walls, the project possibilities are endless.

Sarah Merrell says this project will be your power tool gateway. You’ll pull out her blueprint again and again!

This is the first power tool project Sarah ever picked up. It’s totally beginner friendly. Sarah uses a jigsaw to make it all happen. She says it’s as easy as using a sewing machine, and quite similar. The up and down motion of the saw mimics the movement of a sewing machine’s needle.

SUPPLIES

  • Plywood (your size of choice)
  • Masking Tape
  • Couple Feet of String (not stretchy)
  • Pencil or Marker
  • Jig Saw

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Find the Center Line: Start by determining the center of your board. Measure the width of your plywood and divide that number by two. Mark this midpoint along the width of the board. For example, if your board is 24 inches wide, you should mark the 12-inch point.
  2. Mark the Arch Center: From the top edge of your board, measure down the same distance you calculated earlier (12 inches in our example) and make a mark. This will be the center of your arch.
  3. Prepare for the Arch: Tape one end of your string to the center mark you made. Pull the string taut and hold it in place with a pencil or marker.
  4. Draw the Arch: Keeping the string tight, carefully draw the arch shape on your board. Move the string in a smooth, curved motion to trace your desired arch. Don’t worry if you make a mistake; you can always erase and try again!
  5. Cut the Arch: Using your jigsaw, cut along the marked arch shape. Take your time and cut slowly to ensure a clean, accurate curve.
