Sugar Cookie Heart Flowers

1/2 Cup shortening (can use half shortening half butter)
1 Cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 2/3 Cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 Cup sour cream

Beat shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla together. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sour cream to sugar mixture. Mix well. Chill dough for one hour. Roll out dough about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with heart shaped cookie cutters. Insert a Popsicle stick or skewer into each heart, pushing about half way up into each cookie. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 minutes. Glaze cookies with icing then decorate with royal icing or your favorite icing using cake decorating bags and tips or plastic bags with a corner cut out.

Cookie Glaze
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
2 tsp. milk
2 tsp. light corn syrup
food coloring

Mix sugar and milk thoroughly. Add corn syrup and food coloring and mix well. Add more corn syrup to thin icing.

Royal Icing
4 cups powdered sugar
3 Tbsp. meringue powder
about 6 Tbsp. warm water
Food Coloring

Beat all ingredients until icing forms peaks. This will take about 7 to 10 minutes. Adjust water for consistency.
