Teaching Kids Good Dental Habits

It’s time for summer cleaning and straightening…and not just around your home! That also includes making sure your kids teeth are clean and straight as well.

Dr. Eric Tobler with Stonehaven Dental stopped by Studio 5 to talk about how to help your kids develop good teeth cleaning habits over the summer break and why summer is the perfect time for starting the teeth straightening process.

At Stonehaven Dental, they believe the success in getting kids to be good brushers starts with having some fun. That’s why Stonehaven Dental developed the “Grime Fighters Club” – it’s a fun way to keep the kids excited about keeping the grime off their teeth and get cool stuff too. When they bring in a new pediatric patient, they sign up the child for the Grime Fighters Club. Participants get a certificate and photo of their first visit and cool prizes. Plus, Stonehaven Dental has freshly baked cookies to sweeten the pot!

Dr. Tobler also gave a few brushing tips for kids:

· You always want to brush in a circular motion

· Make sure you spend at least 30 second per side one both the top & the bottom so you are brushing for at least 2 minutes total

· You want to end with kids mouth wash

Summer is also a good time to start the straightening process as it does take time to get used to braces. Let’s face it, braces can be uncomfortable until you get used to them and the process. If you do this over the summer months, your child will be a pro by the time school starts. Stonehaven Dental offers the full array of orthodontic treatments, including Invisalign, ceramic and traditional braces. Plus, in our state-of-the art facility we can do a wide range of treatments so you can come to an orthodontic appointment, and if you needed some work or a cleaning done we can also do dental procedures and cleanings in one appointment and one location. In fact, it is great dental office for moms because we can treat an entire family on the same day no matter if it is general dentistry, orthodontics or just a cleaning all in one stop.

When asked if there is an appropriate time to begin orthodontic treatment, Dr. Tobler said that early treatment is best for prevention or correction. How they treat a patient really depends on each individual, so Stonehaven Dental offers free orthodontic consultations to asses each individual’s needs and to determine the best treatment method.
