The Liquid Face Lift

Dr. Steve Jepson with The Utah Dermatologic & Medical Procedures Clinic shares steps to the Liquid Face Lift.

One of the growing trends in cosmetic medicine is that fewer people are getting surgery and are choosing the newer non-surgical cosmetic techniques instead. One of the most popular non-surgical procedures right now is the “Liquid Facelift”. This term actual refers to several different ways of using various types of facial injections to lift areas of sagging, to fix hollowness, and to reduce the appearance of wrinkling. In this segment, I’m going to focus on changes that occur around the mouth and lower face as we age, and explain how Liquid Facelift techniques can be used to help restore a more youthful appearance.

As the years go by, I’m sure you notice that unwanted changes start to occur in your lower face. Some people will start to notice them as early as their 30s, while others won’t start to be bothered by these changes until their 40s and 50s. Genetics, skin color, sun exposure, smoking history, diet, hormones, and stress all play a role in the aging process, and this wide variety of pro-aging factors explain why different people age at different rates. Some of the most common lower facial changes include:

1. Deepening of the line between your nose and mouth (called the nasolabial fold)

2. your mouth corners start to droop, and you start to develop lines and hollow areas underneath the corners of your mouth (sometimes called the marionette lines)

3. your once-cute dimples turn into not-cute wrinkles

4. you start to form little lines around your lips

5. and your lips start to thin and flatten.

Many of these changes can be easily fixed using an injection called Juvederm. Juvederm is a liquid gel made of Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in your skin and joints and is therefore a very safe and natural way to fix these problems. Using a very small needle, Juvederm can be injected just under the skin or into the lips. With this method, those wrinkles surrounding your mouth can be filled in, hollow areas can be filled up, lip volume can be restored, and sagging mouth corners can be lifted. This procedure has very little downtime (mild swelling, redness, and bruising which all quickly resolve) and the effects are immediate. Juvederm injections usually last 6-9 months and then gradually wear off as your body slowly breaks down the product. The procedure can then be repeated.

Subtle Botox injections can also be included in the lower Liquid Facelift (Botox is a liquid, too). Small amounts of Botox can be injected to lift sagging mouth corners and help reduce the wrinkles that form around the mouth.
