Tips From a “Top Chef”

If your goal is to get healthy, you can use some tips from a “Top Chef” to help get in shape. One contestant from the Bravo TV show is in town for the Salt Lake Home Show and has help for using food to be healthier.

Top Chef Chris Crary will be at the Salt Lake Home Show sharing his ideas.

Food and cooking are such important aspects of most family and social gatherings. For those trying to lose weight, it may seem difficult to find a balance between adjusting your eating habits and enjoying what you eat. Don’t fully limit yourself when you’re trying to stick to healthier lifestyle choices. These simple tips were developed and successfully used by a chef to help you improve your health.

– Choose fresh, seasonal, and local produce when you can
Although it’s winter, fresh produce is still available.

Why not try:
o arugula
o kale
o potatoes
o winter squash
o turnips

– Punch up flavor

When fat is lowered in a dish, most people think flavor is lost. This doesn’t have to be the case if you add high-flavor ingredients in place of the fat. There are plenty of ingredients that will boost flavor.

Mix in:
o fresh herbs
o lemon zest
o garlic
o sundried tomatoes

– Don’t skip meals

When you’re hungry, cravings and snacking are hard to resist. Plan healthy, wholesome meals that will fill you up until your next meal. If you eat full meals, you’re less likely to replace with unhealthy snacks.

– Cut down, but don’t cut out

You don’t have to rid your meals of higher fat sauces and garnishes, simply cut down on the amount. A sprinkle of cheese or bacon can go a long way. You’re cutting down on the calories, but keeping the flavor.

– Maintain your social life, while sticking to healthier habits

Don’t miss out on dinner dates with your friends and family. Most restaurants feature healthier options on their menus. Watch out for high-fat accompaniments, such as French fries, and ask for vegetables or a side salad for substitution.
