To Match or Not to Match

Next time you buy furniture, ditch the matching room set, and try pulling together interesting pieces for a fresh, current look.

Jen Adair with Opal Design Group shares tips to create a fresh room without buying a matching room set.

Design Rules to Break

The price of a matching furniture set may be tempting, but don’t fall into that design trap. Your bed frame can be a different color from your nightstands, and your nightstands can be a different material from your dresser. Being creative with the design elements of a room will add personality and liven up the overall feel.

How to “mismatch” the right way

1. Have a combination of light and dark tones to create depth and contrast.

2. If you select mismatching pieces that customarily come in pairs, make sure they are the same height and make sense in that space.

3. Incorporate different textures and materials into your rooms to brighten things up.

What can you do with matching furniture sets you already have?

1. Start small – Keep the pieces of furniture you have, but move them to other rooms in your home. Replacing nightstands in your bedroom is far less expensive than replacing the entire bedroom set.

2. Invest in an upholstered headboard – This will add a new texture and material to the bed frame and become a nice contrast for the room.
