You’ll want to steal some of these family reunion ideas.
No one does family reunions quite like the Richardson family of Bountiful. Their annual event is big, bright, and bubbling with clever traditions that will likely inspire your next gathering.
Kate Mulford is a member of this awesome family, and shares what makes their reunions so unique.
A Legacy of Togetherness
The Richardson family of Bountiful, Utah, has turned their biennial reunion into a vibrant, multi-generational celebration—complete with themes, costumes, and a wildly entertaining family auction.
The reunion is no small affair. It brings together four generations of family members, including the beloved 93-year-old matriarch, Grandma Verna. “It’s her children, their kids, and their kids. So, there’s four generations,” Kate explained. Held every other year, the reunion draws relatives from across the country.
Themes That Bring the Past to Life
Each reunion is built around a theme, and this year’s was a nostalgic nod to the 1970s. “This year the theme was ‘Back to the Seventies,’ which was when all my aunts and uncles were growing up,” Kate said.
The family went all out with costumes, props, and even a parody of the Brady Bunch theme song. They created a custom “Richardson Bunch” photo board, complete with family members poking their heads through cutouts while singing the song. Matching t-shirts and themed activities helped everyone feel immersed in the fun.
The Family Auction: A Tradition Like No Other
Perhaps the most beloved part of the reunion is the family auction—a tradition that’s anything but ordinary. “Typically when you hear of an auction, it’s not something that is very exciting, especially for children… But the auction is, I think, our favorite part of the reunion,” Kate emphasized.
The auction serves a dual purpose: it’s a source of entertainment and a fundraiser for the next reunion. Family members bring items or services to auction off, and the proceeds go directly into the reunion fund.
What’s on the Auction Block?
The creativity behind the auction items is nothing short of genius. Here’s a taste of what’s been up for grabs:
Practical & Personalized Items
- A custom puzzle made from family photos.
- Closet styling services from a fashion-savvy cousin.
- A Jeep ride through the canyon, perfect for a date night.
Hilarious & Heartfelt Offerings
- A child’s stuffed sloth, which sold for $105.
- Butler service at dinner, complete with a towel and bell.
- A “one-minute party” featuring a cash cannon and cheerleading.
- A cheerleading appearance at any event from your aunt
- A mystery box containing a David Hasselhoff blanket—with a twist: it had an uncle’s face superimposed on it.
Interactive Experiences
- A hide-and-seek challenge with a cash prize.
- A jazzercise class led by a non-dancer aunt, which turned into a hilarious group workout.
More Than Just Fun: Building Bonds That Last
What makes the Richardson reunion so special isn’t just the costumes or the comedy—it’s the way these traditions foster connection. Many of the auction items are designed to create shared experiences throughout the year, like movie nights, dinners, or outings. “Really more service-oriented where you can get together… and just kind of keep those relationships going throughout the year,” Kate said.
