These pieces make up sophisticated fall style.
It’s time for a seasonal refresh! Polish off your fall style with a few seasonal swap outs.
Studio 5 Style & Fashion Contributor Casey Matheny shared five simple swaps to elevate your look this fall. Best of all, most of these swaps are actually already in your closet, ready to be used.
Embrace the Blazer
The first fall style swap Casey suggested is trading in your long and loose cardigan for a blazer. “Cardigans can be great, but they kind of come back different,” she said. This simple change can make your outfit look more intentional and polished.
Blazers maintain the comfort of cardigans, but add a touch of refinement and structure. “Having that structure elevates it and it looks good on most every body,” Casey emphasized.
If you love the cozy feel, cardigan blazers offer the best of both worlds!
Upgrade Your Jacket
Next, Casey recommended swapping out your fitted, cropped jean jacket for a barn jacket. “A barn jacket can still be denim, but it can also be canvas, cotton, corduroy,” she explained. This type of jacket has a longer silhouette and often includes a belt for a more current and sophisticated look.
The versatility of barn jackets allows for various styling options, making them a chic yet approachable addition to your fall wardrobe. “It feels so sophisticated, but sophistication doesn’t have to be boring,” Casey added.
Transition to Trousers
While we love our leggings, Casey encouraged us to try long, loose trousers instead. “Still very comfy, movable, but they’re just a wide leg,” she said. “They just feel more elevated.”
Wide-leg trousers are flattering on all body types, nipping in at the waist and skimming over wider thighs or hips.
They are a fashion trend you’ll see everywhere, Casey said. “Go anywhere. Macy’s, Madewell, J. Crew, Nordstrom, Old Navy… everywhere has these.”
Experiment with Three-Tone Looks
If you’ve mastered the monochromatic look, Casey suggested experimenting with a three-tone palette. “Grab three tones that will look good together,” she said. This lets you be creative while keeping it cohesive and sophisticated.
This style works with neutrals or more vibrant colors. “Choose three, stick to those three and play with them,” Casey said.
Update Your Accessories
Finally, Casey recommended updating your accessories to match the fall season. “Instead of the bright, colorful, maybe plastic accessories or wicker bags and straw hats, we’re going to ground it,” she explained. Reach for wool hats, structured leather or suede bags, and classic, minimal jewelry. You can mix metals like gold and silver, and keep them classic and minimal.
