Vinyl Windows to Save Money

Vinyl Windows to Save Money

As energy prices continue to rise, homeowners are looking for ways to save
money on their utility bills.

One of the best ways to make your home more energy efficient is to replace
your old drafty windows with triple pane windows.

Dave Candland, district sales representative for Wasatch Vinyl Products, says
today’s window technology is better than ever.

Candland says, “At Wasatch Vinyl Products, we really encourage homeowners
to consider installing triple pane windows. A lot of companies are
advertising that there’s really no difference between double pane and triple
pane windows, but that just isn’t true. Government studies have proven that
triple-pane windows can save up to 15 percent more than double-pane
windows when it comes to utility bills. And, triple pane windows can save up
to 40 percent more than single-pane windows. Plus, they make your home
more comfortable, provide a better sound barrier. What’s more, these
windows offer better security than single-pane windows since they’re harder
to break.”

Candland notes that in 2009 and 2010, homeowners could receive a
maximum federal tax credit of $1,500 if they installed new energy efficient
windows. In addition, Rocky Mountain Power and Questar Gas were also
offering rebates. In 2011, federal tax credits have been reduced to a
maximum of $200, although rebates are still available through Rocky
Mountain Power and Questar Gas. Right now, there’s also rebate money
available through the Utah Home Performance Program. This program is
funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and administered by the Utah State
Energy program. Under this program, homeowners could be eligible for up
to a $2,000 rebate if they make home improvements that result in energy
savings. This program only applies to homes that were built prior to 2000.
There’s a limit on this rebate money, so when this money runs out, that’s the
end of it.

When considering windows, Candland says consumers would be wise to use a
company that builds custom-sized windows. “At Wasatch Vinyl, we only do
custom-sized windows. If you buy windows off the shelf, you’ll typically end
up doing a lot of carpentry work inside and outside your home to make the
windows fit properly. This can be both costly and inconvenient. Plus, our
experience has shown that even though two windows may appear to be the
same size, often times the dimensions are different by a few fractions of an
inch,” he says.

Candland also suggests that when it comes to window frames, vinyl is the
best. “A lot of older homes still have aluminum window frames. These
scratch easily, and they conduct both heat and cold, so they’re very poor
insulators. Wood windows require constant painting and caulking, and they
can absorb moisture, which makes them difficult to open and close. If
they’re not cared for, they can even rot. Solid vinyl windows never need
painting and won’t show scratches, because the vinyl is colored throughout
the material—not just on the surface. This is why vinyl windows are the most
the popular choice for both new construction and replacement windows,” he
says.

Finally, Candland says his company is doing everything it can to make new
windows affordable. “At Wasatch Vinyl Products, we offer financing plans
through GE and Well Fargo. Payments can be financed for as low as $55 a
month. Plus, keep in mind that with new windows, you could be saving 30 to
40 percent a month on your utility bills,” he said.

Currently, Wasatch Vinyl Products is offering a special deal. You can get 10
triple-pane windows for the low, low price of $3,985—that’s 20 percent off
the suggested retail price. With the installation of new windows from
Wasatch Vinyl Products, you could also be eligible for up to a $2,000 rebate
from Utah Home Performance.
