Here’s how to have more happiness in your day-to-day.
Women crave happy. We want our lives to be light and joyful, but some days more than others, it can feel like a battle.
Studio 5 Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend wants to help you gain control over your happiness. He believes all it requires is a little bit of soul searching.
The Power of Mindset
Matt was inspired by the quote, “Very little is needed to make a happy life. It is all within yourself in your way of thinking,” by Marcus Aurelius. He emphasized that despite having more money, technology, and abilities than ever before, many people are still unhappy because they seek happiness outside of themselves. He explained, “Our thinking leads to feeling. Feeling leads to action. Action leads to what you’re becoming.”
Four Key Reminders for Happiness
1. Your Reaction Matters More Than What Happened to You
Matt highlighted that happiness isn’t about what happens to us, but how we react to it. By controlling our reactions, we can avoid becoming part of the negativity around us.
2. You Don’t Always Need to Have an Opinion
Matt suggested that not having an opinion on everything can lead to a more peaceful life. Quoting Marcus Aurelius, he said, “You always have an option of having no opinion.” This helps avoid unnecessary stress over things we cannot control.
3. Watch Out for the Illusion of Worry
Worrying about future events that haven’t happened yet is often unproductive. Matt cited Seneca: “He who suffers before it is necessary, suffers more than is necessary.” Instead, we should focus on what we can control and take action within our circle of influence.
4. Criticize Another’s Fault Only After Relating to It
Before criticizing others, we should reflect on our own similar faults. Marcus Aurelius advised, “Whenever you are about to find fault with somebody, ask yourself the following question, what fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I’m about to criticize?” This approach humanizes others and fosters empathy.
We can Control It
Matt reminded us that happiness is largely within our control. By adjusting our mindset and reactions, we can lead more joyful and fulfilling lives. As he concluded, “When two humans get together, we’re happier. We don’t have to fear and fret and be angry at the person like our child or spouse. They’re just like us.”
