5 New Gadgets to Improve Your Fitness

Studio 5 Health and Fitness Contributor Melanie Douglass shares her five new favorite fitness gadgets.

1) Lifespan Heart Rate Ring

Why it’s cool:

Monitoring your heart rate during workouts is a great way to make sure you are using your time efficiently — helping you find the perfect workout intensity to burn calories and optimize your health. A heart rate ring is practical and much easier to use and tote around than a chest strap (which can be bulky, uncomfortable and inconvenient). Chest-strap monitors are more accurate, but can cost $100 or more, so a ring — with a cost of just $30.00 — is affordable and still insightful enough to be a good value… it’s always better to have an idea of what range your heart rate falls into during your workouts. The more you know about your body, the more informed and effective your workouts will be.

You can also find this ring in Sports Authority retail stores.

2) Weider Adjustable Powerbell

Why it’s cool:

Kettle bells have become a big fitness trend because they offer a great dynamic, functional workout experience at home for very little money and very little space. The Weider Powerbell is super cool because it’s adjustable and offers 6 different weight settings: 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5 and 20 pounds. This product also comes with a nicely done workout DVD and fitness journal. Cost: $99.00.

3) Count Me Healthy Jewelry

Why it’s cool:

This is a sterling silver bracelet with handcrafted beads that slide from one side of the bracelet to the other, making it fun, easy, and stylish to track your progress toward your health and fitness goals. The bracelet is elegant enough to wear with any attire and lightweight for everyday activities. Cost: $88.00. Track fun things like:

– servings of fruits and vegetables

– glasses of water

– number of sweets per day

– workouts per week

– sugary beverages

– servings of fiber

4)Dressing Mixer

Why it’s cool:

Not only does this $5.00 dressing mixer come with six recipes printed right on the bottle, but the ingredient amounts are measured onto the bottle as well. You’ll still have to measure a few teaspoons of dry ingredients, but all the liquid amounts (olive oil, vinegar, etc) are marked on the bottle so you can just pour, mix and enjoy!

This product makes preparing your dressing from scratch easier and healthier — because you don’t get all the commercial fillers, sugar, and processed oils. Cost: $5.00.

You can find similar products at most “big box” stores and kitchen specialty shops. I found the Emulstir by Chef’n at Luv to Cook which has stores in Logan and Ogden.
