Professional organizer, Marie Ricks, shares her three H’s for getting to Homework Happiness.
_____________________________________________________________________________
1.) HOMEWORK HAVEN. Set up a routine place where your children can do their homework.
a- personal desk and chair
b- overhead bookshelf
c- personal office supplies
d- good light
2.) HOMEWORK HABIT. Have a regular time each day for homework.
a- snack then homework
b- extra curricular activities then homework
c- homework then play
3.) HOMEWORK HOPE. Motivate with “before . . . ”
a- Remind them of something interesting that will follow.
“We will watch a short video when you are done!”
“There’s a piece of cake for those who get their homework done before Dad gets home!”
“You may have John over to play when your homework is finished!”
b- Remain firm and yet kind in insisting that homework is a priority.
c- Some children need more supervision and encouragement than others.
d- Work towards independence and self-motivation.
So set a time, set a place, get creative with motivators, and be patient with the “slower” one. Homework routines will soon become a natural part of your children’s days, and they will understand you mean business when you say it is “homework” time.
