Pretty Paris Papergoods: 10 vintage papers that evoke that romantic French feel

Vintage papers add charm to any project or space.

When you think Paris, you just think “pretty,” right?  Picture a romantic boutique with vintage papers, sealing stamps, handmade journals, and lovely ribbons. It’s called a “Papeterie.”

French antique expert Amanda Herring has curated the most beautiful French finds in vintage papers.

1. Old papers/ephemera

Amanda loves old papers. They are an easy and inexpensive way to own a piece of history. She loves the handwriting, the paper, the age… the SMELL! Here are some of her favorite ways to use them:

  • Roll them up, tie them with a bow, and put them in a pretty vessel.
  • Use them as a bit of wallpaper in the back of cabinets, or even in the bottom of a drawer.
  • Frame them.

2. Antique postcards

Amanda’s latest collection of postcards were sent from military hospitals and even prisoner of war camps during WWI and WWII. She loves them and the history they represent. One of her favorite ways to display them is with a little metal frog or place card holder. You could even place them in a frame with glass on the front and back so you can enjoy both sides.

3. Banners

The national motto of France is “Liberté, egalité, fraternité,” and we think it’s a great motto for everyone. Who doesn’t like the sound of liberty, equality, and fraternity? Amanda has exclusive custom banners that are fun to hang on a wall or bulletin board. She loves to add ribbon to them!

4. Ribbon

Speaking of ribbon, Amanda loves adding French phrases to her home in any way she can, and these custom exclusive ribbons are a fun way to do that. Phrases like ‘coucou’ (hello familiar), ‘bonjour’ (hello), ‘vive la France,’ ‘Bisous’ (kisses). These look cute in a wreath or wrapped around some old books.

5. Fountain pen and fancy paper

Try your hand at writing like they did in 1850 with a French fountain pen and handmade paper.

6. Wax seals

Seal up your fancy written letter with a wax seal from France.

7. French notebooks

New or old, there’s nothing like a fresh notebook, especially if it’s French. Amanda totally condones writing in old notebooks. Old things should be used and loved, not stored in a cabinet for later.

8. Antique engravings

Engravings were popular in the 1800’s, and started appearing in books and becoming more widely available for purchase. Small pieces are usually affordable and look great in or out of a frame Amanda loves to layer them over other art, creating an interesting display.

9. Paris paper clips and antique paper clips

A great way to add a little bit of Paris to your desk, these adorable clips are a great way to keep track of your stacks of paper.

10. Antique maps
