Here’s what it is like to be an Olympic journalist.
As the 2024 Summer Olympics draw near, the excitement is palpable. Our colleagues at KSL News are gearing up to bring the Olympic highlights straight to your living room.
Tamara Vaifanua, Alex Cabrero, and Sam Farnsworth will headline KSL’s coverage. They’ll be at the center of it all, ensuring you are “taking home the gold” – golden moments, golden highlights, and golden stories.
Alex Cabrero, the veteran of the team, is heading to his eighth Olympics. “I think I just like the torture of it all, not getting any sleep,” he joked.
He assured Sam and Tamara that “it’s an honor to go. It’s so much fun to cover our Utah athletes over there.”
A Day in the Life of an Olympic Journalist
Alex gave us a glimpse into the life of an Olympic journalist. “It’s hard work. The hardest part is the sleep deprivation. That’s really something that you just get used to, being in a fog, honestly, because you have to work in their time zone as things are happening.”
Utah Connections at the Olympics
Tamara highlighted a local gal from Herriman High who will be playing for Team USA Women’s Rugby. “Her name is Spiff Sedrick, and she is amazing. She actually got the name from a gymnastics coach because she’s ‘spiffy.’ She’s 26 now and got involved in the game at age 16. She told me that it’s never too late to start rugby,” Tamara said.
The Pride of Representing Your Country
Sam talked about the pride these athletes feel when they put on their country’s uniform. “Suddenly, they’re putting away their professional jersey and putting on their country’s uniform. There’s a different level of pride for this, especially for some of our international athletes who’ve played in the NBA or for RSL. They put on that country jersey and there’s suddenly that level of pride that just goes to another level.”
Team KSL
As the KSL team prepares to bring us stories from Paris, we’re reminded of the unity that the Olympics bring. “It’s what makes it so fun, right?” said Studio 5’s Brooke Walker. “It’s the unity that comes out that we all have a share of, and you guys will help us have that front row seat. So, no pressure. We’re watching. You’re our players putting on the KSL jersey.”
