Are Your Filters Working?

Tony Oakman, from Lee’s Heating and Air puts some to the test to see how well they do.

-If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to decrease the amount of dust and allergens in your home, have Lee’s Heating and Air replace your old, dirty air filters with newer, more effective ones.

-Having an effective air-filtration system can expand the life of your heating and air conditioning system by decreasing the amount of dust and dirt that accumulates on the furnace’s components which can cause damage. In addition, a good air filter improves your home’s air quality and helps keep it cleaner.

-The particles you breathe in your home come from a variety of sources including:

• Dust on floors or other surfaces that is disturbed by activity in the house.

• Dust generated by smoking, burning candles, cooking, doing laundry, etc.

• Hair and skin flakes from humans or pets.

• Particles from the outside air which come into your home with infiltrating air.

How do you choose the right filter?

-There are many types of air filters on the market. The most common is the disposable, fiberglass filter. While this type of filter is the least expensive, it is also the least effective because it’s designed to block only large dust and dirt particles. Smaller particles pass right through.

-Lee’s Heating and Air recommends using a pleated air filter, which incorporates a much denser mesh material to trap more sizes of dust and dirt particles. The pleated design of these filters increases the filter’s surface area, at the same time allowing for better air passage. This type of filter can be up to 50 percent more efficient than common fiberglass filters.

-Big hardware stores can sell pleated filters for $4.50 to $10 each. Lee’s Heating and Air is offering an April and May special, selling pleated filters for $3.50 each. In addition, Lee’s is able to get these filters in different and odd-shaped sizes to fit just about any heating and air conditioning system found in homes today.

-It’s important to change or clean your pleated filter every two to three months – remember that accumulated dust and dirt on your system’s components are the cause of up to 80 percent of repair calls to service technicians! In air-conditioning season, it’s even more important to change your filters, as these systems can literally freeze-up due to poor air flow.

-With the hot summer months approaching, it’s important to make sure your air conditioning system is working properly and efficiently. For a limited time, Lee’s Heating and Air will tune-up your air conditioner, do a filter inspection and give you three filters, all for $49.
