The Art of the Drop Off: How this small offering boosts connection

Next time you have the thought, drop off something to a friend!

Some may say it’s too easy or too quick to make a difference, but we say otherwise.

Becky Higgins, a woman we admire, believes in the art of the drop off. She emphasized the value in dropping off little treats, notes, or gifts on a friend’s doorstep, even without face-to-face connection.

The Drop Off as a Love Language

Becky explained, “I think there’s something so special about pulling up in the driveway or opening your front door or returning to your desk at work and seeing that someone left you a gift.” This unique expression of love is akin to other love languages like words of affirmation or acts of service.

The biggest benefit of the drop off is the unexpected joy it brings, making someone feel thought of and loved without the need for direct interaction.

Connecting in a Busy World

In today’s busy world, face-to-face connections aren’t always realistic. Becky shared, “Instead of having this all or nothing mentality… the drop off is like the happy place in the middle because it still says I see you. I love you. I care about you.” It’s a beautiful way to show you care, even when time is limited.

Personal Experience with Drop Offs

Becky recently experienced the power of drop offs firsthand when she was bedridden with a virus. She received numerous drop offs, including soup, medicine, herbal tea, and flowers. “I felt so loved,” she said, highlighting the impact of these small acts of kindness.

How to Be Better at the Drop Off

Becky offers two key tips:

  1. Never suppress a generous thought: “All of us receive those promptings… act on it instead of ignoring it.”
  2. Be prepared: Keep small gifts on hand that don’t expire, making it easier to act on generous thoughts. Becky keeps a variety of items on hand, from note cards to small gifts, allowing her to personalize each drop off. She advises having a “gifting closet” or a designated space for these items, making it easy to grab something when the thought arises.

The art of the drop off is a simple yet powerful way to show love and care. Becky said, “There’s never a downside to kindness.” So, next time you have a generous thought, act on it and make someone’s day a little brighter.
