Our beauty expert says this is the best blush for women over 40!
It’s a makeup moment that’s happening in a big way… something that women with more mature skin should lean into. The truth is, we know powdery products tend to sit heavy right on the skin.
Studio 5 Style & Beauty Contributor Megan Moore encouraged us to think more light, bright, and reflective. She shared how to achieve cheeks that glisten and put forward a fresh, radiant finish.

The Wet Look
Megan described this look as “a cheek that has kind of a wet look to it.”
This method is particularly good for mature skin. “Dry, powdery finishes tend to exaggerate texture,” Megan said. This makeup technique brings light, glow, and a little bit of reflection. The result is a more youthful look that enhances the natural contours of the face.
Avoiding the Sweaty Look
We want to look glowy, we don’t want to look sweaty. Megan advised, “You’ve got to make sure it’s intentional and placed purposefully.”
The best place to apply this look is the cheeks while keeping the rest of the face matte. “The safest area is to just go apples of the cheeks and then you can matt-ify everywhere else,” Megan explained.
Cheek Balms
To achieve this look, Megan recommended using cheek balms. “They come in more of a tub,” she explained. “They’re not a liquid. They’re not a cream. They are something you kind of have to scrape out of the tub.”
If you have a powder blush you love, keep using it! Megan said, “Just put any of these on top and treat them like a topper.”
You might think this type of product would wear off, or drip and droop throughout the day. Megan said that because of the consistency, you really don’t have to worry about that. “It really kind of stays put,” she said. “I don’t have a problem with it moving or melting once it’s locked into the place that you want it to live.”
When applying cheek balms, Megan had a few recommendations. First, she likes to scoop it onto a board, take some on her middle fingers and tap them together. “Tap it together and blur it out, warm it up, and then I can just go in right to the apples of my cheeks and press it in in circles,” Megan explained. Start with a small amount and build up.
Focus on the high points of the face, the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, a little on the Cupid’s bow. “It’s not a lot because again, we don’t want to look greasy, we don’t want to look sweaty,” Megan said. “But just that little extra touch. It just brings something to the face.”
If you’re finding your hair sticking to your face, like when you’re wearing a sticky lip gloss, Megan said to “keep this forward in the placement so that hair doesn’t get to it.”
Megan said that a cheek balm is the finishing touch on top of your makeup look. “You could set it, but you will lose some luster. So I tend to say set first, and then this is your icing on top of the cake,” she recommended.
Who Should Try This Look?
Anyone can try this look, but Megan highly recommends it for women over 40. “If you’re 40 plus, this is the way that I would lean for you to blush from now on,” she said. “It is going to rehydrate the skin and give you that glow that we’re sometimes missing as we get older.”
