Western style is making a bit comeback.
A touch of leather, a hint of fringe, even shoes with a little bit of attitude. We are seeing a huge swing in Western-inspired fashion right now. So, we’re sharing ways to bring that Western flair into your own fall wardrobe in a refined and approachable way.
Stylist Reachel Bagley breaks down must-have pieces, and the styling advice to pull it off.
The Rise of Western Fashion
Reachel has an idea where the rise of Western style came from. “I think it all started after Beyonce’s album came out,” she said. This trend is an interesting nuance in Utah since it aligns with local culture a bit.
It is a trend we can be hesitant to embrace fully. “You don’t want to end up looking like you’re going to a costume party,” Reachel said. Her ideas just give a subtle nod to the trend while still keeping you classy.
Reachel loves the historical aspect of fashion. She is a big fan of Western style because it “speaks of our American heritage and culture.”
3 Outfits for the Modern Western Look
1. Sweet and Feminine
For a softer, more feminine style, Reachel suggested incorporating quilted details. “The quilting speaks so much to the female culture and heritage,” she explained. Pairing quilted pieces with modern colors and faux leather can creates a sweet and contemporary look. It’s a Laura Ingalls Wilder vibe with a modern twist.
2. Edgy and Bold
This outfit makes a bolder statement. Combining elements of a rodeo queen with a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader by incorporating fringe, leather, and crocodile textures. “The fringe really brings out that Western flair,” said Reachel. Channel your inner Beyonce and add some extra flair to your holiday outfits.
3. Polished and Refined
For a more polished and everyday look, Reachel recommended a classic button-down shirt with subtle Western nods, like a horse motif or a bandana. “You can tie those around your wrist, around your bags,” she suggested. Studded accessories are huge right now. Look for studded, canteen shaped bags you can fit under your arm.
“You don’t have to go with the whole cowboy boot,” Reachel emphasized. “You can go with the cowboy mule.” You can pull this style out for weekdays and special occasions.
How to Wear Cowboy Boots
Cowboy boots are a staple of Western fashion, but they can be tricky to style. Reachel advised wearing them with skirts and dresses. If you prefer pants, make sure they have enough flare to fit the boots underneath. Otherwise, you’ll have to go with skinny jeans. “You might want to give it a test drive,” she recommended.
