‘The best communicators are curious.’ These are the 10 habits of a strong communicator

The best communicators do these 10 things.

They say our habits define us. The small choices we make on a daily basis add up to be the total sum of who we are. If you want to become better at something, you start with incorporating new habits.

We are sharing “The Habits Of…” in a new series. Studio 5 Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend shared the habits of a better communicator.

  1. Be Present

The first habit of every great communicator is being present. As Matt explained, “If you’re not present in our conversations, we don’t win. Period.” This means turning off distractions and fully engaging with the person you’re communicating with. Presence allows you to pick up on nuances and connect more deeply.

  1. Cultivate Curiosity

Curiosity is a powerful tool in communication. “The best communicators out there are curious,” said Matt. By showing genuine interest in others and asking thoughtful questions, you can learn more and build stronger connections.

  1. Show Empathy

Empathy involves taking the place of another and understanding their perspective. Matt highlighted the importance of this habit: “The minute you take that place of the other, it changes you.”

  1. Mean What You Say

Effective communicators say what they mean and mean what they say. Avoid using bravado, bluffs, or exaggeration. “The best communicators, when they say it, they mean it,” Matt emphasized. This builds trust and credibility.

  1. Listen Actively

Active listening is crucial for effective communication. It involves not just hearing the words, but understanding the emotions and intentions behind them. This habit helps you respond more thoughtfully and appropriately.

  1. Use Non-Verbal Cues

Non-verbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions, plays a significant role in how messages are received. Being aware of and using these cues can enhance your communication effectiveness.

  1. Be Clear and Concise

Clarity and conciseness are key to ensuring your message is understood. Avoid unnecessary jargon and get to the point. This makes your communication more efficient and impactful.

  1. Adapt to Your Audience

Understanding your audience and tailoring your message to their needs and preferences is essential. This habit helps you connect better and ensures your message resonates with them.

  1. Practice Patience

Patience is a virtue in communication. It allows you to listen fully, respond thoughtfully, and avoid misunderstandings. This habit fosters a more respectful and productive dialogue.

  1. Seek Feedback

Finally, seeking feedback helps you improve your communication skills. It provides insights into how others perceive your messages and highlights areas for improvement.
