These are the thoughts to leave in 2024.
As we step into 2025, it’s essential to leave behind the parts of 2024 that no longer serve us.
Studio 5 Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend shared how to declutter our minds for a fresh start in the new year.
The Importance of Transition Points
“Transition points are the perfect time to make some real, intentional choices, some real cleaning up,” said Matt. Just like moving into a new house, we shouldn’t bring along the old, unnecessary baggage. Instead, we should focus on what will serve us in the coming year.
Letting Go of Unhelpful Thoughts
Certain thoughts from the past year may have held us back. Matt suggested identifying these thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. “What’s one thought that we know if we could carry it into the new year would have a big impact on us?” he asked. Find a mantra or a quote that resonates with you and repeat it throughout the day. Like, “I’m capable” or “I’m proud of myself.”
Releasing Regret and Resentment
Feelings of regret and resentment can weigh us down. Matt advised us to learn from these emotions and then let them go. “Regret and resentment serve a small purpose, but the purpose ends once we’ve learned,” he explained. Visualize putting these emotions in a box and setting it on a river to float away.
Overcoming Unhealthy Habits
Unhealthy habits can discourage us and drain our energy. Matt shared his personal experience of giving up Diet Coke after realizing it was discouraging him. “Anything that doesn’t support your heart will end up discouraging you,” he noted. Identify one habit to let go of and replace it with a healthier alternative.
Believing You Are Enough
One of the most critical beliefs to leave behind is the notion that you are not enough. “You are enough,” Matt emphasized. Recognize your worth and be grateful for everything you have. Help others believe in their worth as well.
Moving Forward with Gratitude
As we embrace 2025, let’s make a list of everything we’re grateful for and carry those positive feelings into the new year. “Go make sure you help other people believe that they’re enough,” Matt encouraged.
