Embracing Simplicity: 4 ways to make the Christmas season less stressful

Simplify the Christmas season!

Social media often bombards us with images of Pinterest-worthy decorations and picture-perfect family traditions. A quick scroll might leave you feeling like you’re falling short of what a normal Christmas should look like.

Lisa Andersen redefined normal by seizing the simplicity of the season and embracing a more authentic approach to the holidays.

The Influence of Social Media

Lisa shared how social media shapes our expectations of Christmas. She noted, “The whole point of Instagram is to keep people on the app… so, as somebody who’s scrolling, I remind myself their job is to do things that are amazing and beautiful.” This perspective helps her detach from unrealistic standards and focus on what truly matters.

Finding Joy in Simplicity

Lisa emphasized the importance of simplicity during the holiday season. She believes that joy comes from doing what genuinely brings happiness, even if it looks different for everyone. “You don’t have to do every single Christmas thing there is to do,” she advised. By letting go of unnecessary tasks, you can focus on what brings true joy.

Lisa suggested three key considerations for a meaningful Christmas:

  1. How do I want to show up for my family? Reflect on how you want to be present for your family. Lisa encouraged prioritizing happiness and love, and avoiding activities that lead to stress and overwhelm.
  2. How do I want my home to feel? Consider the feelings you want to cultivate in your home. Whether it’s comfort, fun, or simplicity, choose decorations and activities that align with these feelings.
  3. What truly matters to me? Identify what is most important to you during the holidays. Whether it’s serving with your family or hosting a holiday party, focus on these meaningful activities and let go of the rest.

Personal Traditions and Normalcy

Lisa shared her own family’s traditions, which includes simple decorations and a cherished, eclectic Christmas tree filled with meaningful ornaments. “Our tree is just this eclectic collection of memories,” she said. These personal touches make the holiday special, even if they aren’t Instagram-perfect.

Advice for Overwhelmed Women

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to create a perfect Christmas, Lisa offered her advice: “What is the cost for you to achieve whatever it is you’re thinking of? If you’re willing to pay the price, then awesome, but most women would probably say, ‘no, I’m not willing to be stressed or overwhelmed.'” She encouraged women to pivot towards a simpler, more joyful holiday season.

As we approach the holiday season, Lisa’s advice reminds us to embrace simplicity and focus on what truly brings joy. By redefining normal and letting go of unrealistic expectations, we can create a meaningful and stress-free Christmas.
