Family Photo Inspiration

Instead of offering advice on what you should wear – we’re just showing you what to wear!

Photographer Jami Edman shares four examples of families who got it right.

It is that time of year! Some dread it, some love it….but it is time to think of those annual family photos. One of the biggest challenges is deciding what to wear. Here are a few things to think about:

With a busy background, keep your clothing neutral – but add texture!

If the background on your image is busy, keep your clothing neutral – but be sure to add some texture. No plain jeans with black shirts. Neutrals can have stripes, different fabrics, grays mixed with creams, etc. Just keep it more simple if you have background that is doing the talking.

Don’t be afraid to mix plaid with stripes.

This rule works great with boys or girls. Just keep them in the same color groups.

Stick with one color tone.

I always tell my clients to either go with warm tones (reds, oranges, browns, creams) or cooler tones (blues, grays, purples, black). If you pick one color tone and then mix in different textures, layers and types of clothes – it will all come together.

Match your home.

Pick your clothes with your home in mind. How is your home decorated? Hopefully your family photo will be hanging in your home. So why not choose clothing that will compliment how you decorate? The family we choose to showcase on the segment had just built a custom home. The photo shoot was done at her home in different rooms, so she picked clothing that would complement all the different rooms in her home.

Now is the time to book your family photos. Don’t be afraid to ask for your photographer’s advice on how to dress! I would love to create a beautiful family photo for you.
