Faux stems too tall for your shelf? 5 ways to style short stems in tight spaces

Manipulate faux stems you already have to fit smaller spaces!

When you’re looking to add some warmth to your winter decor, faux florals are often the go-to design element. But what do you do when you’re trying to fill a shelf that just doesn’t have the space for those big, beautiful stems?

Designer Sarah Grover shared some solutions for all the cabinet shelves and built-ins in your home.

The Challenge of Small Spaces

We often struggle to find decor options for smaller spaces, especially after taking down holiday decorations. “In January, we’ve taken everything down, and then we’re like, what do we put back up?” Sarah noted. We want the color and warmth, but the challenge is curating it effectively in tight spaces.

Thinking Outside the Vase

Traditional vases can sometimes be too large for small shelves and built-ins. Instead, Sarah suggested using unconventional pieces like baskets and trays. “Think outside the vase,” she advised. A small basket or a cute tray are great options to hold faux stems, adding a touch of greenery without overwhelming the space.

Creative Containers

Sarah emphasized the versatility of different containers. You could use cloche to display greenery in a more compact way. “You can plop some greenery right inside,” she said. This option is perfect for tight spaces like kitchen counters. You can also repurpose pitchers for shelves and built-ins instead of confining them to the kitchen.

Types of Greens and Florals

Choosing the right type of faux florals is important. Sarah recommended using floral balls, bushes, and sprays. “You can just pick three or four and put them in a bowl that’s maybe been hiding in your cupboard,” she suggested. These greenery options are not too tall and fit well in small spaces, adding a pop of color without taking up too much room.

Manipulating Stems

If you already have longer stems, Sarah advised bending or cutting them to fit the space. “Bend, cut, manipulate, you can use what you have,” she explained. This flexibility lets you make the most of your existing decor without buying new.

Styling Tips

When styling your shelves, mix greens in with your existing decor. “Your greens are a neutral, so you can mix them in with your existing decor,” Sarah said. Use different variations and textures for a balanced look. For example, combine floral balls with sprays and cloches.
