Generational Photos

Studio 5 Contributor and Photographer Laci Davis helps us capture more meaning within those memories.

During these fun summer months we are so busy with holidays, backyard gatherings and family reunions. Take advantage of these times by taking some lasting generation photos. Here are a few ideas and inspiration:

Capture What Connects You

We all have those special talents that have been passed on from generation to generation. Capture those in a photo. From learning to make your Grandmother’s famous bread, crocheting, or going out to your Grandfather’s farm, these are all great ways to remember our heritage and the greatest things we learned and took away from them. So get in those moments, learn, and get the photo!

Love What Was Left Behind

Don’t we always just treasure every little thing that is left behind after a love one is gone? Get those favorite gems, tokens or mementos and use them as photo prop. It’s a great way to remember and will make a wonderful memory.

The Art of Arranging

Make sure to capture more than just that quick group shot, with everyone leaning in at the dinner table for a quick photo. Focus in on those details – even the features -that link your family.

►Get close and get a profile shot. It’s always fun to see how much we look alike and how our features have evolved through the generations.

►Create a real life family tree. Capture a photo of all the generations standing together creating your own family tree. (Make sure to put Grandma at the forefront!)

►Capture your features. Get in close and get those hands, eyes, and don’t forget the smiles (my favorite feature!)

Objects Hold Meaning

This is an opportunity to create timeless art.Often we are all not lucky enough to have all generations alive and present with us. So create something with meaning. Gather and collect meaningful belongings from all generations (baby blankets, wedding veils, clothing, etc.), style it beautifully, go somewhere that means something to you, and you will have a touching photo that will last forever with strong memories and great love captured.
