Get the Most Out of Your Child’s Haircut!

Shanna Yoder, Stylist for SNIP-ITS Hair salon has some suggestions for trimming and primping your kids hair between cuts.

Girls with longer hair generally need to have their hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks; while girls with shorter hair may need a trim every 4-6 weeks to maintain healthy hair and a sharp style. To get more mileage out of your girl’s cut, try trimming the bangs at home in between haircuts. This will help maintain a clean style around the face.

Boys generally need trims more often, typically every 3 to 4 weeks. To stretch that time a bit, try using a pair of electric clippers to trim around the ears and neck between cuts.

Utah is a dry climate so be sure to condition hair regularly, and yes… boys’ hair and scalp should be condition too! Consider using gel and other styling products that are made for children that will rinse out easily without leaving buildup. And for longer hair try a homemade detangling spray! Just mix a tablespoon size of crème conditioner with a medium size spray bottle (12-16 oz) of warm water and shake well.

For toddlers and young children getting a haircut can be a new and intimidating experience. Try these ideas to get the most out of your cut!

• Be sure to bring your child in after naps and meals, if your child is tired or hungry he or she may have a hard time holding still or be easily upset

• Bring a picture of the style or cut you would like for your child, and ask your stylist about styling tips too

• For children with special needs, don’t be afraid to ask for questions! Many salons have stylists that are trained to work with children with special needs. To prepare your young child for the actual haircut visit the salon once or twice beforehand and meet the stylist before ever getting their hair cut. Most importantly, make this a positive experience for both you and your child!
