These are ways to strengthen any relationship in your life.
Whether your relationships are thriving or facing challenges, there are always ways to improve them.
Studio 5 Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend shared how to strengthen any relationship, from fostering synchrony to embracing sacrifice.
The Importance of Synchrony
Matt emphasized the concept of synchrony, which is the ability to attune to another person. He explained, “If you pay attention to somebody enough, your brain will actually pair to their brain, and you’ll start sharing the same emotion and chemistry.” This synchrony can be fostered through proximity, closeness, and attention.
In today’s world, distractions like phones often hinder this connection. Matt suggested, “Anything we can do to get rid of the distraction and create more attention to each other fosters the synchrony.”
Reframing Sacrifice
Sacrifice is often seen as a loss of self, but Matt argued that it is essential for building strong relationships. He stated, “The more we sacrifice for somebody, the closer we can get.” Sacrifice should be mutual and should not require compromising one’s highest values and principles. When viewed positively, sacrifice becomes empowering and a source of love.
Overcoming Commodity Culture
In a world where relationships are often seen as disposable, Matt highlighted the need for trust and vulnerability. He advised, “We need to learn to be vulnerable with one person, our closest person.” Building trust involves being honorable and trustworthy, creating a safe space for others to share their true selves.
Being Your Real Self
Authenticity is crucial for healthy relationships. Matt encouraged people to “get good at being your real self” and to avoid the pressures of presenting a perfect image. By being genuine and embracing our true selves, we create an environment where others feel safe to do the same.
