Gourd Lights – A Garden of Unearthly Delights

Kiersten Blanchard, a Studio 5 Contributer, shows us how to use this funky vegetable to brighten up your Halloween night.

Needed:

Gourds (you decide how many)

Heavy-handled utility knife

Electric drill with ¼” bit (additional sizes for a variety of hole sizes)

Small kitchen spoon

Strand of lights

Cutting board

1. To make a large hole in the gourd’s base, drill several holes close together. The large hole needs to be big enough for a light bulb to fit through. Cut out the hole with a utility knife by cutting through the small holes, like joining dots.

2. Repeat this with the gourd’s top, this time drilling only 3 or 4 holes, to produce a smaller hole. This hole will house the bulb socket.

3. Using a spoon, hollow out the gourd.

4. Drill decorative holes around the gourd for light to show through.

5. Push the bulb socket into smaller hole and pull out through the larger hole on the bottom. Screw the light bulb into the socket and pull the socket (and light bulb) back into the gourd.

6. Hang the lights, or lay them along the edge of a sidewalk to light a path. Plug them in for a delightful display.

(When choosing a strand of lights, you can use pre-spaced lights, or space them yourself along a zip-cord wire, using carnival light-socket fixtures.)
