Homemade Neighbor Gifts for Under $3

Designer Kristine McKay helps you create a meaningful yet affordable gift for neighbors and friends.

Decorative Cookie pedestal platter for only $2– spice up your “holiday goodies” presentation with a fancy cookie pedestal made from a decorative plate and basic candle holder from the dollar store (it is made by mounting the plate on top of the candle holder with glass or ceramic glue).

Glass pedestal candy dish– Using the same concept create a beveled glass candy dish on a pedestal by mounting a glass bowl with lid onto a class candle holder. Fill with pepermints and attach a decorative vintage tag (avalailable for free download).

$20 candycane candle holder for under $3– I saw these dandies at a craft store, and they were charging $20. I created them by mounting a tin can (covered in candycane patterned paper) on top of a 6″ chair post from The Home Depot that I had painted off white and antiqued (you could also use a candle holder from the dollar store).

$10 Christmas Block candle holder for $3– I saw this candle holder as well and loved it. Simply adhere coordinating Christmas patterned paper to a 3″ wooden block. Adhere a $0.50 glass candle holder to the top with glass glue or a high temp hot glue.

Monogram ornament holder $3– Create this unique ornament holder from a wooden monogram letter, a wooden dowel, and a 6″ wooden circle plaque. Simply drill a hole in the cicle plaque large enough to insert the wooden dowel (cut to desired length aprox 10-12 inches). Paint the base and the monogram and let dry. Adhere patterned paper to the monogram if desired and attach a hook to the bottom of the monogram. Mount the top of the dowl behind the monogram letter using a high temp hot glue gun. Use the holder to attach photos, mini-albums, wreaths, or other ornaments.

Snowflake Photo holder $3– This is a slight variation from the ornament holder (slightly smaller) made from a metal snowflake ornament. A wooden dowl, a 3″ wooden circle plaque and an alagator clamp. the clip holds photos, recipes, coupons, and more.

Santa’s Magic Key under $3– Give “Santa’s Magic Key” for under $3. You can find antique keys at almost any botique. However for a really good deal you can purchase a set of 4 on a ring for around $9 at Rod Works. Simply use wire snippers to break the ring. Tie a ribbon around each key and attach the free downloadable poem . Makes a great gift by itself or attach to a bottle of non-alcholic wine or plate of treats.

“__ Days until Christmas” tree $3– Attach a small piece of metal to a 12″ decorative wooden tree (available at Michael’s or simply use heavy chipboard), cover with pattern paper and attach to a small paper mache box that has been covered in decorative paper as well. The box will contain the numbers necessary to count down to Christmas on small wooden stars that have a magnet back. The tree will say “____ days until” and the box will say “Christmas”. The print out and directions are free for download on my site.
