June Dairy Month

Kimberlee Carlile and Alicia Roberts are two Ambassadors who spread the word about how easy it is to get your servings of dairy.

It may seem daunting at first, incorporating dairy products such as cheese, milk, yogurt and ice cream (sparingly) on a daily basis. But you’ll find it is easy because you can add dairy to any meal a la carte, or in some dishes, substitute water or juice with milk.

1. Strawberry-sicles: Mix lowfat strawberry milk with fresh strawberry slices and freeze in a popsicle container.

2. Cheese Ka-bob: Alternate small slices of apples and reduced fat Cheddar cheese on skewers.

3. Fruit Smoothie: Blend fresh fruit slices with strawberry yogurt and ice (option: add milk).

Go for the Flavored Milk

Regular and flavored milk have the same nutritional content. Although chocolate milk and other flavored milks do have some added sugars, the benefits still outweigh options such as sodas and some fruit juices in terms of their nutritional benefits. In addition, milk can help aid in weight loss.

Another factor most people are unaware of is that flavored milk offers great benefits when used as a sports recovery drink. It differs from typical sports drinks like Gatorade, PowerAde and water in that it offers nutrients your body needs to refuel and recover faster from physical activity. In fact, it’s a favorite post-practice beverage of many local and national university football teams as it’s loaded with electrolytes and essential vitamins to help replace what athlete’s burn. The protein found in milk aids in muscle growth and development, plus, it’s 90% water, which helps fight dehydration.
