You are probably reading this because you are one of many people in the United States suffering from a low thyroid or symptoms of a low thyroid. There is a good chance you have been misdiagnosed or have been given an incomplete diagnosis that could change your prognosis and quality of life immensely.

It can be extremely frustrating when you are trying everything you can to lose weight and get rid of the symptoms that come with a low thyroid, but no matter what you try to do and no matter who you see to help, you continue to feel the same problems and the same symptoms. Trust me, I know because I see patients just like you every day in my

practice who have gone from Doctor to Doctor, and treatment to treatment, spending more and more money without getting any results. There is also a very common low thyroid condition that is totally misdiagnosed that could be totally detrimental to your health and quality of life.

How could this be missed by my Doctor?

Thyroid imbalances are usually secondary to the other problems going on in the body. Many times it is not the thyroid that causes the problem, it can be one of many imbalances going on in the body that has an impact on the thyroid. So when a Doctor runs a TSH and sees that it is high and then prescribes a hormone replacement without further testing, this can be a problem. To help you better understand how this one disease, in my opinion, is the most mismanaged disease in the nation, I have made a list below of some of the many things that can cause suppression of TSH in your body.

1. Anterior Pituitary Hypo-function

2. Increased thyroid binding proteins

3. Over-conversion of T3 leading to resistance

4. Under-conversion of T4 to T3

5. Nutrient Deficiency

6. Autoimmune (Hoshimotos) – The number one cause of low thyroid!!!!!

Now, do you think that a complete diagnosis of one of these issues might change your treatment plan a little and decrease all your symptoms? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Most Doctors just run a TSH and if they go above and beyond they might run a T3, T4, and then they will provide you with a hormone replacement, then out the door you go. You might feel a little better for a couple of months and then all of a sudden the dreadful symptoms come right back with full force.

Why don’t most Doctors do more testing?

In my opinion, most Doctors don’t do any further evaluation because no matter what they find, they still won’t change their course of treatment. If they evaluate further and find something different, they will still give you a hormone replacement. That is the frustrating part. When you treat people like a protocol you tend to get the same results. That’s why many women are walking around on hormone replacements and still have all the terrible signs and symptoms they originally had. Here is a list of the other markers, which are important to run in order to properly diagnose your thyroid.

1. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

2. Total T4 (TT4)

3. Free T4 (FT4)

4. Free Thyroxine Index (FTI)

5. Resin T3 uptake (T3U)

6. Free T3 (FT3)

7. Reverse T3 (rT3)

8. TPO and Thyroglobulin Antibodies

The thyroid is a very complex organ and has many different functions. It requires a 3 step process for diagnosis, which I have listed below:

1. You have to be able to know what tests to run.

2. You have to know how to analyze those tests.

3. You must know how to build a treatment plan for each individual to fit their specific needs.

If you only know how to do 2 of the 3, the patient is going to continue with their troubles. Remember, everyone is uniquely different from one another and could have a totally different problem. It is very important to make each treatment plan very personalized to address each individual’s specific needs.

Back to the number one cause of low thyroid in America – Hoshimotos

The number one cause of low thyroid is an autoimmune disease. That’s right! It is not even a thyroid problem! It is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid, which if not treated properly, can lead to other serious conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. Don’t you think this information could change the course of your care a little? Here is the crazy thing… it rarely gets checked for. Why? Because it won’t change the Doctor’s protocol. The only drugs available for thyroid disorders are thyroid hormones. The Doctor usually will follow his protocol, which is to prescribe the hormone replacement medications. Meanwhile the patient continues with the protocol, while the risk of their disease getting worse and causing other serious conditions grows. The symptoms continue, no matter how high the hormone dosage becomes.

Testimonial of a recent patient:

I’ve been taking thyroid medication for 12 years. The Doctors kept adding more and more medications, and I didn’t see any changes. I couldn’t lose weight even though I barely ate and exercised daily. I was cold all the time. I was tired all the time. I could hardly get up out of bed and start the day. I was depressed to where I thought this might be the end of the road for me, until I saw Dr. Redd on TV with one of his patients talking about thyroid problems. I decided to give him a chance at helping me even though many other Doctors and medications failed. Now after doing detailed medical testing Dr. Redd figured out what was actually causing my symptoms and he built me a treatment plan and goals to get better. Since then I have lost 25 lbs!! I have more energy than I have had in years. I can finally clean and be a Mom and Wife again. I have fun with my husband and kids. I no longer need to wear a sweater inside and outside of the house no matter how hot it is. Dr. Redd gave me my life back, and he gave my husband his wife back and my children their Mom back. I highly recommend Dr. Redd. When it comes to thyroid problems he knows it. There is no other Doctor out there who cares more about his patients than he does.

Testimonial of a Medical Doctor:

The results Dr. Redd is experiencing with his Diabetic and Thyroid patients consistently, blows me away. Time and time again my confidence is increased in Dr. Redd and the programs he offers to people suffering from these two chronic conditions. He clearly has an excellent knowledge of Type II Diabetes and Thyroid related problems, including Hypothyroidism. I have continued to see his patients make changes that I haven’t seen in this medical era. Through detailed medical testing and analysis, he is able to properly diagnose specifically what is causing the patient’s disease. Once the patient’s disease is properly diagnosed, Dr. Redd has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to successfully create a treatment plan for that specific patient’s needs, which results in significantly better health and well-being for the individual. He has proven to be a phenomenal commodity with his Functional Medicine approach. I highly recommend him to those who are suffering with any of these two very common conditions.
