New Groundbreaking Treatment for GERD Comes to Utah—Heartburn Care Center first in state to offer LINX® Reflux Management System
What is LINX® Reflux Management System?
LINX® Management System is a small, flexible device designed to minimize and even eliminate the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). LINX® is a titanium ring of magnetic beads that is placed around the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In a patient with GERD, the LES is weakened and functions abnormally, allowing stomach acid and bile to reflux into the esophagus. By strengthening the LES with the LINX® device, stomach acid is blocked from entering the esophagus, reducing most pain and discomfort associated with GERD. The components the LINX® device are unique — the magnetic bond is strong enough to help the LES resist gastric pressure yet will temporarily break to allow for normal swallowing.
Who is a good candidate for this surgical option?
For some patients with GERD, traditional, nonsurgical treatment methods are unsuccessful. GERD is a chronic and progressive condition that can result in serious complications if left untreated. LINX® Reflux Management System offers a highly adaptable option for GERD by addressing the source of reflux, which is a weak LES. This is a permanent solution to those who have not found relief elsewhere.
How is the LINX® device implanted?
Through a minimally-invasive technique called laparoscopy, a surgeon uses a precision sizing tool to determine the appropriate size of the ring to use on each patient. The LINX® device is then positioned around the LES and the ends are secured together. The procedure generally lasts less than an hour, and most patients expect a quick recovery.
The Heartburn Care Center at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center is the first
medical center in Utah to provide the LINX® Reflux Management System.
