WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME
TODAY . . .
Wash Clothes in Cold Water – 90% of the energy used by the washing machine goes into heating water. Use detergent formulated for cold water & your clothes will get just as clean.
Pull the Plug – Electronics that are not in use still suck energy, even when the switch is off. Unplug devices that are rarely in use.
Adjust the Thermostat – Lower your thermostat by one degree in the winter and raise it by one degree in the summer. If this is comfortable, adjust by another degree or two. You will save money as well as energy!
Use Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs – Replacing just one 75-watt incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb will save $3 – $15 per year and about 570 kilowatt-hours of electricity over its lifetime.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME
THIS MONTH . . .
Install an Efficient Showerhead – An efficient shower head will save tens of thousands of gallons of water each year, saving both water and the energy used to heat that water.
Insulate and Weatherize – Weather-stripping doors and sealing windows will reduce heat loss. Add insulation in your attic if necessary.
Plant Trees on the South and West Sides of Your House – Shading the west side of your house protects from hot glaring western sun and reduces your cooling needs. Deciduous trees on the south will shade your home in the summer and allow the warm sun in in the winter.
Choose Efficient Appliances – If you need a new dishwasher, washing machine or other appliance, as a minimum, choose one that meets Energy Star standards. There is up to 40% difference in electricity use between the most and the least efficient appliances on the market.
