Pickleball & Mental Health: This study shows the benefits of playing this popular sport

Pickleball isn’t just fun, it can boost mental health!

A new year brings new trends, goals, and passions. Even with all the new, one thing is certain: pickleball is here to stay. This sport, loved by many, is an all-year-round hobby that offers numerous benefits. Recent research suggests that sharing this love with children and grandchildren can be particularly beneficial.

BYU psychology professor Paul Caldarella conducted a study to explore how pickleball affects youth mental health. Paul started playing pickleball during COVID-19 with his son. He noticed that his son was in a much better mood when playing pickleball, which sparked his interest in studying its effects on youth.

Methodology

Paul designed a survey and gave it to over 50 junior pickleball players under the age of 18, most of whom were between 12 and 15 years old. The survey aimed to understand the mental health benefits of playing pickleball.

Findings

The study found that virtually all participants enjoyed playing pickleball. Paul noted, “Playing pickleball helped their mental health in areas such as less stress, improved coping, and better mood. They also said that pickleball helped them make friends.”

Social and Family Benefits

Pickleball is a social sport that can strengthen relationships with children and grandchildren. It’s relatively easy to get into and doesn’t require specialized equipment or training.

Paul explained, “It’s a way of spending quality time as a family or with our kids. It involves teamwork… and encourages communication between you and your youth.”
