Take studio portraits with your own camera. Photographer Kristin Wilkerson explains why studio renting is practical for professionals and parents.
It seems like lately that you don’t see studio work as much as you used to. Moms and DIY-ers everywhere are shooting on location or making their own backdrops. But did you know that studio owners are now renting their studios to professionals and moms alike?
How Does Renting a Professional Studio Work? It depends on what studio you are renting. The studio that I use and love is called Cache Valley Photographers Connection in Logan, Utah. You schedule with Cody the studio owner and pay an hourly rate of $35.00.
What is included in the rental? Cody’s studio includes lighting, props, backdrops, blankets, and hats for newborns. Anything and everything you need is right there in the studio and included in your rental.
What if you don’t know how to use studio lighting? Many of the studio’s now day compliment both natural light and studio light. The nice thing about the Logan Studio is that for only $5.00 you can attend a studio lighting class that teaches you all that you need to know.
Any tips for us when shooting in studio:
-When photographing busy young children in the studio try to contain them on a chair or a stool. Studio photography usually is less candid. Placing them in a basket, on a chair, or stool even helps you keep them still long enough to get their attention and smile pointed in your direction.
-Take the time to learn the studio lighting. Sometimes we shy away from learning because we are more comfortable with natural light. A simple studio light set up doesn’t have to be intimidating and can add a beautiful touch to your photos.
-Don’t overdo props. Sometimes we get a little excited and throw in too many props with studio sessions. Remember that sometimes less is more. Keep it clean and simple and it will be more pleasing to the eye.
