Show genuine interest to deepen connections. 4 principles that strengthen relationships

Deepen connections with others by implementing these four principles.

After 18 years as a guest on Studio 5, Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend has really come to know host, Brooke Walker, and her masterful skills in connecting at deeper levels with others – in front of and behind the camera. He believes Brooke’s ability to make each guest shine is truly remarkable, and that we can all learn from her warmth and relatability.

Here are four principles, inspired by Brooke, that Matt suggested we could all employ to deepen connections with those around us.

  1. Brooke Dedicates Focused Time & Attention On the One

The greatest gift we can give others is our presence. In an era of constant distractions, Matt said it’s more important than ever to be present in the moment and pay attention to the person we’re with. This involves maintaining eye contact, being responsive in the conversation, acknowledging interruptions, and getting back on track.

  1. Brooke Creates Safe Spaces

Creating a safe space in relationships, conversations, friend groups, workplaces, or marriages is crucial for open communication and sharing of feelings. It’s not just about what we say, but also about the space in which we’re saying certain things. Matt said you can show someone you really care by offering empathy and matching their energy. If they’re getting vulnerable, you should too.

  1. Brooke Shows Sincere Curiosity

Matt believes showing a genuine interest in what others are saying is key to deepening connections. This doesn’t mean faking interest, but rather getting curious about what they are saying. He suggested using curiosity as a tool to go deeper in conversations, discovering the how’s, when’s, and why’s of the other person’s experiences and interests.

  1. Brooke Has Intentional Regard for Others

Every person we interact with is unique and special. Recognizing the divine spark within each person can help us honor the core of who they are. Matt encouraged us to see others through our highest values and principles, and to connect to their divine spark as we interact with them.

When you’re trying to connect deeper with your friends and family, Matt believes that employing these principles will ensure a deeper connection with all the “guests” in your life.
