Studio 5 November Theme: Be Daring

It’s a new month and that means it’s time to announce a new Studio 5 theme. And our November theme could be our most exciting theme, yet.

They are the people we typically label as crazy: daredevils, stunt men, thrill seekers…we’ve always thought they might be wired a little differently. And scientists will tell you that just may be the case. They now believe daring people share a common biological symptom, and it’s all in the brain. Daring people crave “Dopamine.”

According to Dr. Gregory Berns of Emory University, dopamine is a release of a neuro-transmitter in the brain that scientists associate with both pleasure and novelty seeking.

So what if you’re lacking in the “dopamine department?” What if you won’t walk a tightrope or jump out of a plane? Does that mean you’re not daring? We don’t think so.

The truth is, some of the scariest challenges we face come in the form of daily decisions. In the end, it’s our everyday experiences that determine our bravery, our strength and our faith.

Jennifer Heslop, Studio 5 Contributor: “I think to ‘Be Daring’ means to be brave and to step outside of your comfort zone. I think people often hold back because they are afraid of failure, or what others might think of them. This month, I’m going to show you how to be a daring do-it-yourselfer. We are going to take simple, everyday items and transform them into something spectacular.”

Dr. Liz Hale, Family & Relationship Contributor: “I think Helen Keller said it best. She said: ‘Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.’ I think the fact that Helen Keller made her life a daring adventure, really humbles me. Kids often play the game ‘Truth or Dare.’ I say, let’s play truth and dare. Let’s be daring enough to live our lives to the fullest. Dare to love, dare to care, dare to make a difference in the community. Dare to leave an abusive relationship. Dare to stay in one worth saving. But dare to make a difference and dare to show up in your true self.”

Darin Adams, Studio 5 Co-host: “I love this theme because I love it when we tell people to get outside of their comfort level. The only problem is, this time we have to do that, too! With our ‘5 Days, 5 Dares’ series, we will each be taking on a dare of our own. I’m getting a little nervous, but what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess!”

Brooke Walker, Studio 5 Co-host: “When I think of the word ‘daring’ a lot of definitions come to mind: bold, adventurous, gutsy, courageous. But I also think of faith. Although it’s a word we typically associate with religion, I think living a life full of faith lends itself to a daring existence. It often takes a leap of faith to make simple, daily decisions about our relationships, our careers, our families. So this month as we challenge ourselves to ‘Be Daring’ my thought is it’s going to take more than just guts…it’s going to take faith.”

So here’s to a month of adventure—a month of thrill. We hope you come along for the ride. And don’t feel like you have to be drastic. We just want you to be daring.
