Style File: Playing With Crayons

Coloring is not just for the kids! Put down the pencil, ladies, and pick up a
crayon!

Studio 5 Beauty & Style Contributor Holly Stone says crayon cosmetics are a
hot, new trend and an easy tool.

Can you really “color on” your concealer, eye shadow, lip stain and blush?
Absolutely! Cosmetic “crayons” are the EASIEST tools to use when applying
make up. The gel-based product with paper-like packaging houses some of
the most eye catching colors. But don’t confuse cosmetic kohl crayons with
cosmetic pencils.

Make up pencils are created the same way as lead pencils – the casing is
typically made of wood and is molded and blended WITH the pigmented
make up stick making the color and its house one in the same. Make up
crayons are actually poured into their paper casing actually making two parts:
1) the casing and 2) the color stick. The end result? A softer gel based
product which is easier to apply. It also doesn’t disappear as fast when it is
sharpened. This is because the sharpener peels away the casing rather than
both the product and the casing as with a pencil.

Choose a round, metal sharpener because it has the ideal slant of blade for
sharpening these kinds of crayons. Pencil sharpeners have a narrower slope
so they can sharpen to the very tip of the pencil. A crayon sharpener must
have less slant so it shaves the outside and leaves the inside intact.

Coloring is no longer just for kids. Whether you want a smoky eye, or a quick
fix for a blemish, these crayons make it simple to say inside the lines. The
only rule is that you have fun!

1. Concealer

For moderate to full coverage, a crayon concealer works much like a stick
concealer only you don’t have to remove a cap and then twist up a tube.
Simply pop off the lid, dab where needed and blend.

Holly’s Product Pick: Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer, Sephora $16

2. Eye Crayon

Francois Nars knows make up and created one of the BEST eye crayons on
the market today. This jumbo sized crayon provides rich color that stays
right where you put it. Just swipe where you want some color. Or line all the
way around the eye for a smoky eye in a snap. No cosmetic degree necessary.

3. Brow

Brows frame the eyes and should be groomed accordingly. To color in a great
brow, look for a softer brow crayon which will blend easily and lay down
smoothly.

Holly’s Product Pick: Benefit Instant Brow Pencil, $20

Highlighting the brow bone is a quick way to wake up the eye area. And who
better than the world famous brow expert Anastasia to bring us a crayon to
do the trick? While people pay $200 to have her adorn your brows, you can
opt for a highlighter crayon and select the side that suits your mood. Use
inside corner of eye and above the brow bone for a special effect. For unruly
brows, with one stroke of Brow Fix wax with Aloe and vitamins- even the
toughest is tamed.

pleasers anywhere for the perfect pout in seconds.

that doubles as a vibrant eye shadow. They are so smooth, you will think you
are dancing on water.

6. Blushing naturally

If blushing doesn’t come naturally, color it on with a light lip stain that is
perfect for the cheek area because of its gel base and light color. Just draw
along your cheek bone towards top of your ear and blend. Your complexion
will have a healthy looking flush. Add some dew drops with a highlighter and
you are the epitome of natural beauty.
