Be on the lookout for these local connections at the Olympics!
The buzz has been building, the excitement has been mounting, and now we’re ready to go. The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics is on Friday, and we’re thrilled to be part of this worldwide stage.
Desert News publisher Burke Olsen previewed the names, faces, and events that carry a strong Utah theme.
The Return of Jimmer
First on our list is the return of Jimmer. “Jimmer is back competing in three-on-three basketball. He was, of course, an offensive powerhouse at BYU. Really good at scoring points, and he’s had to become a little bit more well-rounded,” Burke explained.
Chari Hawkins: A Rising Star
Next, we have a former Utah State Aggie, Chari Hawkins. “Chari Hawkins is 33 years old and she’s only gotten better with age. When she was at Utah State, she didn’t score points in the N.C.A.A., but she kept going. She tried two other times to qualify for the Olympics and made it in this time. She qualified in the heptathlon,” Burke explained.
Steeplechase Powerhouse
BYU has become sort of a steeplechase powerhouse. Former BYU alum, Kenneth Rooks, who gained fame last year during the national championships, had a memorable journey. After a fall that sent him to the back of the pack, he made a remarkable comeback and won the championship. This year, he repeated his victory, solidifying his reputation.
James Corrigan, another competitor and former BYU athlete, initially finished third without a qualifying time. However, undeterred, he attended another meet, broke his record, and secured his qualification for the Olympics.
In addition to these two, we also have Courtney Wayment from BYU. Her story is particularly inspiring. Upon learning of her selection, she expressed profound gratitude and faith on Instagram, which resonated with many.
Sport Climbers in Utah
Finally, we have our connection to sport climbers. “USA Climbing moved its headquarters here to Salt Lake City and Team USA is the only team that has a full roster, four men, four women, who all either live in or train here in Salt Lake City,” Burke said.
Special Announcement
As we look forward to the start of the Olympics, we also anticipate a special announcement. “Wednesday morning, we’ll know probably at about 4:20 a.m. If Salt Lake City will go from the 2002 Winter Olympics to the 2034 Winter Olympics,” Burke revealed.
As we gear up for the Paris Olympics, let’s cheer on our Utah athletes and look forward to the possibility of hosting the Winter Olympics again. Stay tuned to Desert News for all the latest updates and profiles on our local athletes. Let the games begin!
