Creating Keepsakes Editor, Megan Hoeppner shares the cool tools behind the looks we love.
1. The Technique: Applying Color
The Tool: Various Liquid Color Mediums
From basic paint to spray mist, adding artistic hues to paper projects is hugely popular. And with its ease of use and versatility, it’s easy to see why.
SPRAY MIST
This type of product is hot, hot, hot right now. Lightly mist it on background paper for a speckled effect, or spray it on different surfaces (such as tissue paper) for unique focal points.

2. The Technique: Preserving Stories
The Tool: Mini Albums
Mini albums make creating bite-sized scrapbooks a simple, enjoyable task. And they’re incredibly popular right now in the paper crafting world. With different types of mini albums (acrylic, chipboard, wood, felt, paper, blended, etc.), there are many creative possibilities when it comes to telling your story.

3. The Technique: Adding Texture with Textiles
The Tool: Mixed Media
The days of flat paper projects are long gone. In today’s paper crafting world, it’s all about mixing mediums. With tulle, fabric, trims, canvas and even burlap, it’s a textured treat of a world we live in!

Note the use of the fabric on the cupcake top. I stitched the cupcake on the card front, lightly stuffing it with scraps of fabric to create a puffy effect. The cherry is a corduroy brad, and the cupcake liner is cut from an actual cupcake liner by Martha Stewart Crafts.
4. The Technique: Machine Stitching
The Tool: Sewing Machine
Okay, so maybe sewing machines aren’t the latest thing to hit the tool shelf, and maybe sewing on paper isn’t a brand new concept, either, but sewing designs is definitely hot. From layouts and cards to paper banners and home décor, stitching is a popular, pretty design element.

Note the stitching down the center of the butterflies. By stitching the butterflies in place, the wings are able to rise up off the card, where they wouldn’t be able to with glue.

5. The Technique: Letterpress and Die-Cutting
The Tool: The Epic by QuicKutz
This is my favorite tool to hit the scrapbooking market in a long time. I’ve always loved the letterpress look, and it seems to be more popular than ever. Unfortunately, the traditional letterpress machines are hard to come by and very expensive. Thanks to this tool, which also die-cuts, creating a fresh letterpress look is now easy and affordable.
