Fall is really the time to solidify your workout routine.
While January always seems to be referred to as the time everyone gets back on track with their fitness, did you know that September is actually the biggest month? Kids are back in school, vacations are finished, schedules are set, and that means it’s time to put your health first and get back into a workout recharge.
Studio 5 Fitness Contributor Emily Nelson shared why this time of year is really the best time to get back into a workout routine. She has five ways to recharge your workouts this fall.
Step 1: Find a Time That Works
Look realistically at your schedule with work, kids, school, and commitments. Truly take a look at your schedule and find a time that works for you on a consistent basis.
“Not a sometimes, but a workout time or schedule that you can make work, and commit to it,” Emily said. Put it in your calendar as a meeting because you deserve this time.
Step 2: Set Realistic Goals
Re-evaluate what you want from your health and fitness goals. It’s one thing to show up to work out, but it’s another thing to have a renewed sense of purpose.
“I don’t want you to set unrealistic unattainable goals, but rather, set a new sense of purpose and drive around your health and fitness,” Emily emphasized. Be realistic about what can work for you at this point in your life.
Step 3: Go Outside
Consider nature. We have made it to the perfect ‘get outside’ weather – crisper mornings and nights, milder temperatures during the days, leaves are changing.
“Challenge yourself to take at least one workout a week outside, hopefully more,” Emily recommended.
The power of an outdoor walk everyday is something that goes beyond physical. “Getting outside, clearing your head, and feeling that vitamin D can to do wonders for our mental health and clarity,” Emily emphasized.
Step 4: Find a Like-Minded Accountability Partner
Enlist a like-minded friend. “Now I’m not saying you can’t workout with anyone, because it should be a ‘more the merrier’ situation,” Emily said. “But, when it comes to a workout accountability partner, you need someone who has like minded goals, abilities, and drive.” Working out with someone who enjoys the same things, pace, and time will make getting up and going seamless. Having someone to count on you, and you to count on them, is the greatest gift you can give yourself when it comes to getting the motivation needed to workout.
Step 5: Create Long-Lasting Habits
“This is not an all or nothing,” Emily emphasized. Sustainable workout routines that will last forever are focused around overall wellness. Notice this is not ‘new year, new me.’ This is, ‘what can I do to get back on track after a crazy summer when routine goes out the window.’ Focus on creating habits and routines that are long-term sustainable. Be well rounded in your approach of adding in stretching, yoga, sleep, meditation, and trying new things.
“Life is about balance, and true wellness can not be achieved without mindful focus on a workout routine that brings energy and life rather than exhaustion,” Emily said.
