Become a noticer. 4 ways to bring more positivity into the lives of others

A noticer expresses appreciation, even if it feels awkward.

In our fast-paced, self-focused world, it’s easy to overlook the unique and remarkable details that make others special.

Life coach Tiffany Peterson believes we can change this by practicing the art of being a noticer. This simple practice can brighten your day and bring a little sunshine to someone else’s, too.

What is a Noticer?

A noticer is someone who tunes in to the positive aspects of life and the people around them. Tiffany explained, “We live in a selfie culture that’s so self-focused. It’s all about me. And nothing wrong with a good selfie here and there, but that leads to a pretty empty life.” Instead, she encouraged shifting your attention and intention towards noticing the good in others.

Setting the Intention

The first step to becoming a noticer is setting the intention. Tiffany emphasized, “Your brain is an evidence-seeking organism. It’s always looking for evidence.” By consciously deciding to look for the good in others, we train our brains to notice more positive things. This shift in focus can expand the good in our lives, much like how we start seeing our new car everywhere after we buy it.

The Power of Honey Lips

One of Tiffany’s memorable concepts is “honey lips.” She explained, “Honey lips is really just saying, ‘I’m going to have a mouth of praise,’ and that sweetness comes from my lips.” This means regularly expressing praise and appreciation for others. Whether it’s through a text, a handwritten note, or a face-to-face compliment, expressing positive thoughts can make a significant impact.

Expressing Appreciation

Noticing the good in others is just the first step. The next step is to express it. Tiffany encouraged sharing your positive observations, even if it feels vulnerable or awkward. “If you can help make someone’s day better and brighter, why wouldn’t we?” she asked. By expressing appreciation, we can spread positivity and make a difference in someone’s day.

Complimenting Character

While it’s easy to compliment someone’s appearance, Tiffany suggested going deeper by complimenting their character. She said, “Move into complimenting character. I really appreciate how inclusive you are, how kind you are, how thoughtful you are.” These deeper compliments show that we truly see and appreciate the person for who they are.

Becoming a noticer is about shifting our focus from ourselves to the positive aspects of others. “We need more of that in our homes, our workplaces, online, every which way,” Tiffany reminded us.
