Cleaner and Healthier Indoor Air

Tony Oakman from Lee’s Heating and Air shares ways to protect your home from forms of indoor air pollution.

Oakman says, “American Standard has spent years testing for a system that is superior in removing both allergens and viruses from re-circulated air. The result is this super cleaner called the AccuClean. Studies show the AccuClean system removes 99.98 percent of allergens, including dust, mold and pollen – plus, it doesn’t require any of expensive replacement cartridges that other systems need. American Standard says the AccuClean is eight times more effective than the best HEPA device, and 100 times more effective than the ionic-type room appliance.”

With the Accuclean system air is passed through several stages of filtration, the first of which is a pre-filter that collects large particles to protect the system’s equipment. Contaminated air particles are then charged so they are attracted to the oppositely charged collection cells.

“I have an AccuClean system in my home and ever since I installed it, the dust has practically disappeared from furniture and even the blinds,” says Oakman. He adds, “A lot of people who have installed the AccuClean system say they sleep better at night since they’re no longer suffering from the congestion and heavy breathing that’s caused by allergies.”

In most cases, the AccuClean system can be added to an existing heating and air conditioning system at a cost of around $1,500. The AccuClean system eliminates the need to purchase air filters, because all the filters in the AccuClean system are washable.

For those who may not be in a position to install an AccuClean, a good air filter on your heating/air conditioning system can help. The most common air filter is the disposable fiberglass type. It is the least expensive and according to Oakman the least effective. “A fiberglass filter is only designed to block large dust and dirt particles. At Lee’s, we recommend a pleated filter. The pleated design of the filter increases the filter’s surface area, which allows for better air passage. This type of filter can be up to 50 percent more efficient than fiberglass filters,” says Oakman.
